Netanyahu Faces New Challenges as Prime Minister
Former PM's Brother Marks 40th Anniversary of Geisel Rescue
Benjamin Netanyahu, who became Prime Minister of Israel once more in December 2022, faces a number of new challenges in his third term. One of the most immediate is the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, which has escalated in recent months. Netanyahu has also pledged to address the country's economic problems and to improve relations with neighboring Arab states.
Netanyahu's Personal History
Netanyahu's older brother, Yonatan Netanyahu, was killed leading a counter-terrorist operation in 1976. The elder Netanyahu was one of the most celebrated military heroes of Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently cited his brother's death as a motivating factor in his own political career.
Netanyahu was born in New York City in 1949. He served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021. He is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Israeli history.
